We are breaking down all the best Big Island weekend events as we get ready for the New Year!
This weekend is all about MOCHI, that sweet rice dough that so many make soo tastely here on Big Island! Here’s a couple events we especially recommend…
Mochitsuki & Kadomatsu Making 2019
This event will take place at the Donkey Mill lawn in Holualoa from 10am to 2pm this Saturday the 28th. This used to be an annual event but it hasn’t taken place since 2012. Fortunately this year the tradition continues once again. Join this fun, education event for the whole family. The event encourages guests to “Let some focused aggression be set free during the pounding of rice for mochitsuki and practice centering and a bit of poetry while making a kadomatsu, a New Year’s decoration inviting ancestral spirits for your home.” Admission is $10 and keikis under 10 are free. Find out more here.
22nd Annual Wailea Village Annual Mochi Pounding Festival
This annual tradition started small and has grown over the years to a very popular community event. Akiko’s invites you to join the fun this Saturday the 18th from 8am to 2pm mochi pounding and more. Take your turn pounding the rice for good luck! Come and join the fun on Saturday, Dec. 28th, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. making traditional rice cakes the “old-fashioned” way. Everyone takes their turn at pounding the delicious sticky rice for good luck. This will be a great cultural event for the whole family. Learn more in this video here.
